Master of Theology (Research Track)

 

Program Objective

This program is designed for graduates of the Master of Divinity program, offering academic research opportunities to pastoral workers.  ABS will also consider the application for admission from graduates of the Master of Christian Studies degree on individual basis.

 

Program Design

To graduate, students must, within 5 years, undertake academic studies under the guidance and supervision of an instructor, complete a 50,000-word Master thesis, and successfully pass the oral defense.

 

Admission Requirements

  1. Applicants must hold an approved Master of Divinity degree or equivalent.
  2. Applicant hold a Master of Christian Studies degree or equivalent is required to complete an addition of 36 credits in the Master of Divinity program upon admission.
  3. A master’s level thesis proposal must be submitted together with the application.

Master of Theology (Course-taking Track)

 

Program Objective

This program is designed for graduates of the Master of Divinity program, offering continuing education and upgrading opportunities to pastoral workers.  Students may choose in-depth studies in various areas, strengthening their knowledge of the Scriptures, deepening their theological reflection, and exploring special skills in different areas of ministry, so as to work out how to minister in the context of Chinese culture.  Students may enroll in this program as full-time or part-time students.

 

Program Design

  1. The study period is 5 years.
  2. Students are required to complete a total of 36 credits and attain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to graduate.
  3. Course requirements vary depending on the major.  Students are required to select a major upon admission and complete the program under the requirements of the major.

 

Majors

  1. Biblical Studies (such as Old Testament, New Testament, Hermeneutics, etc.)
  2. Theological Studies (such as History of Christianity, Systematic Theology, Contemporary Theology, Christian Ethics, Theology of Spiritual, etc.)

 

Credit Requirements

Major                   5 courses    15 credits

Electives              3 courses    9 credits

Block Seminar     Twice         3 credits

Thesis                                      9 credits

Total                                       36 credits

 

Major Courses (15 credits)

Biblical Studies

  1. Theology and Hermeneutics
  2. Advanced Greek OR Advanced Hebrew
  3. Three Biblical Studies electives

 

Theological Studies

  1. Theology and Hermeneutics
  2. Selected Reading of Theological Texts
  3. Three Theological Studies electives

 

Elective Courses (9 credits)

Students can choose any Th.M.-level courses from whichever major.

 

Block Seminars (3 credits)

Students are required to join at least two block seminars, submit written reports on the seminar contents, and present their works in one of the seminars.

 

Research Thesis (9 credits)

With the guidance of the mentor, complete a thesis (minimum word limit: 30,000 in Chinese).

  1. Chinese Cultural Studies
  2. Intercultural Studies
  3. Practical Theology (such as Worship and Sacred Music, Christian Education and Pastoral Ministry, Evangelical Theology and Church Growth, etc.)

Major          2 courses    6 credits

Electives     8 courses    24 credits

Thesis                            6 credits

Total                             36 credits

 

Major Courses (6 credits)

 

Th.M.-level courses provided by the majoring Department.

 

Elective Courses (24 credits)

Students can choose any Th.M.-level courses from whichever major.  Students can also choose M.Div.-level courses designed for current pastors, with a limit of up to 21 credits.

 

Research Thesis (6 credits)

With the guidance of the mentor, complete a thesis (minimum word limit: 20,000 in Chinese).

  2. Applicant hold a Master of Christian Studies degree or equivalent is required to complete an addition of 36 credits in the Master of Divinity program upon admission.
